When a man looks for prostate treatment, he usually wants more than better urination. He wants calmer nights, a manageable recovery, and to keep his sex life as unaffected as possible. That is where the interest in Rezum comes from: it uses water vapour to reduce the tissue that causes the blockage. But choosing well starts with understanding what the technique can offer, and when another option is a better fit.
How water vapour therapy works
The doctor passes a device through the urethra and injects measured amounts of steam into specific areas of the prostate. The heat spreads into the targeted tissue, which the body then clears away gradually. So, unlike some endoscopic operations, the tissue isn't removed straight away, and the improvement takes time.
Who may benefit from Rezum
There is strong evidence for Rezum in men with moderate to severe symptoms and a prostate of 30 to 80 ml, the group included in the pivotal clinical trial. The middle lobe can also be treated in selected cases. A larger prostate, or urinary retention, calls for individual assessment, and it shouldn't be assumed that the results will match those of the original trial.
What happens after the procedure
You may need a temporary catheter, and during recovery you may notice burning, frequent urination or a little blood in your urine. Symptoms can get worse for a while before they improve. Your doctor will decide when the catheter comes out, plan your follow-up according to your case, and explain when pain, bleeding or fever means you should be seen urgently.
What the studies show
Follow-up of the pivotal trial showed that the improvement in symptoms lasted for up to five years, with 4.4% of participants needing further surgery. That figure applies to the patients in the trial and doesn't necessarily include every kind of return to treatment, such as restarting medication. The data support preserved sexual function in many patients, but this is not an individual guarantee that ejaculation or erections won't change.
A more important question than the name of the technique
Before choosing Rezum, ask: do the degree of obstruction and the shape of my prostate suit this treatment, and can I wait for a gradual improvement? The answers help you weigh Rezum against procedures that remove the blockage directly.
