Children's urology
Many children's urology conditions have an ideal time for treatment. Early assessment gives parents time to decide.
Overview
We see children from infancy to adolescence, and explain the condition, the treatment options and the right timing for each to parents.
We keep the visit calm for the child, and parents leave knowing what to watch for at home.
Common symptoms
- A testicle missing from the scrotum since birth
- The urinary opening in an unusual position
- Bedwetting that continues past age five to seven
- Urinary infections with fever in babies and children
- Swelling in the scrotum or groin
How we diagnose it
- Clinical examination
- Usually enough to diagnose undescended testis and hypospadias.
- Ultrasound
- Of the kidneys and bladder, with no radiation.
- Voiding cystourethrogram
- In selected cases, to check for urine flowing back to the kidneys.
Treatment options
Listed from least invasive. Treatment is chosen after assessment and agreed with you.
Frequently asked questions
Can we wait for the testis to come down on its own?
It may descend in the first months. If it hasn't by six months, surgery is the right next step.
When is bedwetting a problem?
It's common up to age five. After that we assess it if it bothers the child or family, and most cases improve.
Is newborn circumcision safe?
Yes, when done under medical supervision in sterile conditions, with follow-up afterwards.
