Read about thisWill the stone pass on its own?
A stone's size in millimetres is the biggest factor in how it's treated. Move the slider to see what usually happens at each size.
- Up to 5 mmUsually passes on its own. Most stones this size pass within weeks with fluids and pain relief. We follow up until we're sure it has passed.
- 5 to 10 mmMay need help. Less likely to pass alone. We may prescribe medicine that relaxes the ureter and follow up with imaging, stepping in if it doesn't pass or causes a blockage.
- 10 to 20 mmUsually needs treatment. Rarely passes alone. The choice is usually shock-wave lithotripsy or ureteroscopy with laser, depending on position and density.
- Over 20 mmLarge stone. Large kidney stones are usually treated with percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL), or with a scope over more than one session.
A general guide for kidney and ureteric stones. Position, density, infection or blockage can change the decision, which your doctor makes after imaging.
